In Christiansfeld, there were grand plans for the town when it was founded in 1773. The new Ideal Town set new standards and had significance far beyond the town’s own boarders.
They had God on their side, the Herrnhuters. Because Herrnhut means under the Lord's protection. Christian VII had invited them so that the congregation could create economic prosperity in the area. The Herrnhuters had their own plan. They were here to create an ideal Christian town. In many ways, they were far ahead. Instead of low, dark buildings, light, air, and cleanliness prevailed in the town. All children attended school and were encouraged to learn. Notably, corporal punishment was not permitted in these schools. It wasn’t until 1967 that corporal punishment was abolished in other schools throughout Denmark. The congregation took care of both the young and the old.
